About Chantaburi

"Chan" is the word that people use to call Chanthaburi's inner city. The word may well derive from the name of the city that was inscribed in the Sansakrit language as Chantaraburi.

The inner part of the city, located more than 10 km from the coast, has the chanthaburi River flowing through it, The old market lis along the western river bank and mostly offers gems. The town has also expanded westward along the river.

Getting There. There are local Mazda taxis available - pick up trucks made in 1972 with engine of 1,000-1,300 CC. Visit ors can also simply walk and enjoy the place.

"Attractions"

The Suan Mamuang freshfood market. The market comes alive before dawn with sellers busy preparing their fresh produce, especially seafood and some local herbs which can be found nowhere else. Around the market, there will becoffee and porridge dishes available-besides other breakfast options. From here, continue your trip by visiting

Tha Luang which is the old residential area made from wooden and cement blocks well-over a 100 years old. Many houses still have some cement inscriptions attached as well as carved and decorative wood. Some are hotels, others are drugstores. It was once a market where locals traded with Bangkok traders when roads were inaccessible.

Christ Church. Wat Phra Mae Patisonthi Niramol is a 200 year-old Roman-Catholic church dating from the Ayutthaya period. The church is built in the Gothic style and can be accessed via the bridge connecting it with the Tha Luang area.

 

The shrine of King Taksin. Next to the King's statue is the city's pillar, which is beautifully lit at night.

 

King Taksin Park is on the west side of the town covering over 300 rai. It comprises a big lake in the middle where King Taksin's statue stands on an artificial island. The park has a lovely variety of flowers and is popular with the local people in the early morning and the cool of the evening.
